about

Hey guys,

It’s been a long time coming, i’ve had this puppy for quite some time now, i’ve always been afraid to not make it justice by not being able to present it to you in a good fashion.. It’s now done, and i’m very happy to share it with you all! It’s the first time that it’s available on the internet, and i think the last time as well lol!

The Powertran Digital Delay Line was designed by Tim Orr (of EMS Synthi) and was offered as a DIY project in a british DIY publication in 1981. I’ll include the article / manual along with the captures, so you can get more familiar with it. I find these digital delays very educational, because nowadays, we’ve got (not so good) plugins for phasers, flangers, choruses etc, but do you know how these really work?

Mine comes from Blue Note studio in London, UK, and it’s in a perfect shape, i only had to change the output volume potentiometer when i bought it, the capacitors were in great shape!

Unfortunately, i can’t capture flanging sounds with impulses, otherwise you know i would have gone nuts and done a thorough exploration of it as well lol! We have to be content with its delay side, and its great tone which ain’t bad at all :)

The capture is pretty big, 502 mo, i did count the raw captures before i did the stereo presets, and i was at 233, but i didn’t count after i finished because i added more lol

I’ve only kept the musical settings because i didn’t wanna clutter the folders with useless things. I know that some of you dig or wonder about the weird shit that can happen if you set a 0,62ms delay at maximum repeat, but trust me, it doesn’t lead anywhere useful/interesting lol!

So we’ve got delay times ranging from 0.62ms to 1.6 seconds (20 delay settings), i did captures from no repeat at all to maximum, once again enabling us to get more from the hardware than what it does, because at max setting it’s auto oscillating pretty hard!!

As for the repeats, as i told you earlier, i only kept the useful stuff. For most of them you’ll find repeat from no repeat to max, but when i didn’t think it was cool, i just left the ok settings and moved on!

I did capture everything twice, so i could make mono and true stereo presets for each setting, and when i was doing the stereo presets, i put one side out of phase for the lel. … and loved it, so i bounced these as well for each preset. They’re labelled as OOPS (Out of phase) :) Use these at your own discretion, but please check your tracks in mono to make sure it doesn’t fuck up everything, or don’t if you don’t care about the radio and if you just wanna make your music for yourself! I personally encourage you to express yourself truely instead of trying to mimic what’s already existing, our time on earth is not eternal, be close to your own individuality and let your music look like you, it will make it much more interesting for music fans / other human beings, and for music in general!

I also wanted to thank every one of you who took the time to email me just to chat about music and music nerdism, and those of you who supported me by donating money or buying stuff with a price attached to it! Believe me it’s really appreciated :) It reminds me that i need to put out more stuff lol also!!

Last year wasn’t so good for me i was bored to death by work and even considered quitting music as a pro thing, to protect it from all the business bullshit and have it only as a hobby. But i took the time to ponder things, and even confronted myself with the ‘real world’ and knew that that life wasn’t for me, the only thing i care about is expanding my knowledge and apply it as i can into my creations.
So this year has been better, i’ve worked with new brands that i had never worked with, i’ve even done a tv ad for a cvlt french porn company called Dorcel lol, for a vibro, for valentine’s day lol!

Believe me guys when i tell you to dig within yourself instead of trying to appear the same as X or Y artist, working as a pro musican is all about that, and it’s really not funny year after year! Develop your ‘artist’ side instead and let brands support your art instead of you falling asleep at the wheel doing whatever business people with no ideas and no taste will ask you to do! I wish i had done that more than willing to comply with society lol!

There is not much for me to say that i didn’t tell you already, i can’t promise you that i’ll put out another IR set shortly, because i don’t wanna force myself to do it just to do it and not do it well (and it takes so much time to do!). But doing this for the Powertran lifted my impulse response spirit, and i’m looking at my Russian Elektronika RC-02 thinking ‘ i hope you’re not internet shy buddy’ lol!! (I feel like a youtuber saying sorry for not posting videos more often lol, ah the present timez)

Arigatō gozaimasu / Merci mes chats! :)

ps: i've just done the demos for it, it sounds even better than i expected, i'm def super happy with the outcome: a beautiful inspiring tone! no click, no plugins, instruments into impulse player only check it for yourself!!

My philosophy in life, and in sound has always been that i wanna be free. Knowing how to do things myself, at least understanding intellectually the principle of something that i can then turn into a know how, and make my own.
